For me, feeling welcome is about feeling included and respected.
We all have different opinions. What matters is that we listen to everybody’s opinion and understand that we all need to not just listen, but hear what people are saying. Don’t disregard things just because you don’t agree with them – keep an open mind.
We are all equal human beings but our backgrounds are different. Sometimes peer support from someone who has lived experience is more valuable than the opinion of an expert, who is basing their ideas on what they’ve read in a textbook. To me, inclusion means the expert listening to people with lived experience, just as much as the other way around.
I think we should all be working together for the benefit of everyone, not just a few. If you want to change things, get involved. Make yourself heard. And remember to listen.
