Christmaspoem

‘Winter Wonderland’

Underneath the tree,
reading my new book,
Lost within the words and lights,
Didn’t know where I was when I looked,

Seemed to have tumbled into a frosty scene,
With scattered letters all round me,
Sweeping up; between the A B C’s,
Another kind of letter I see,

An invitation to the Snow Ball!
And at that moment snow started to fall,
running past and in a hurry,
I watch a Thanksgiving turkey scurry,

“I’m late! I’m late!” He squawks and cries,
I notice in his hand the same invite,
“Mr Turkey, could you please show me the way?”
“Yes. Be quick. Like I said, I’m late!”

Soon we approach a sign,
With arrows this way, that way, and in squiggly lines,
What’s the right way? Maybe it’s left?
A red light appears shining it’s best,

Followed by a smile twinkling like tinsel,
Then two antlers like candles on windowsill,
“Rudolph! Please lead the way!”
We follow as if riding Santa’s sleigh,

Through a forest of Christmas trees,
Baubles hanging from their leaves,
Then to a village of gingerbread houses,
Mr turkey stops at his to clean his glasses-,

-at his home’s kitchen sink,
So, we could have a very quick drink,
But oops! I knock into a wall,
And then like playing cards they fall!

I apologise, but it’s ok,
Mr Turkey wanted to redecorate!
With gumdrops and icing we make a house so great,
(But only quickly – don’t forget we’re late!)

Warm flavourful scents lead us down the road,
Where the Duchess resides in her humble abode,
Busy cooking up every festive dish,
Her pig in blanket is her most specialist!

The four of us now march on our way,
poinsettia singing as we see a strange display,
Someone in red asks cards of green,
“Please use different wrapping paper – it’s not Halloween!”

I can hear jingle bells and I know we are near,
A grand icicle entrance means we are here,
As we step in, caterpillar asks “who are you?”
Reader, I think you know what to do!

We sit with the Hatter at a table so long,
Drinking tea that keeps our hands cosy and warm,
And then we dance while snow falls up not down,
While something flies to us from over the town,

And on the blanket of white,
Coloured gifts do appear,
We hear “Ho ho ho!”,
And give a Christmas cheer!

It’s a fun game to find,
Which present is mine,
Little dormouse gives me a hint,
While Mr Turkey gets more time,

Finally, I see it,
Underneath the tree,
And when I read my new book,
I awake from a dream.
