Inclusion

There is an autistic boy in my son’s class in primary school and he desperately wanted to be
with the other children at the school fireworks night, but would have to leave before the
firework display began because he couldn’t cope with the noise, so his mum asked on the
WhatsApp group we set up for the class parents what time folk were going to arrive.
This then led to a WhatsApp discussion which included parents on the organising
committee about other children who struggled with sensory overload, a realisation that
some children were being left out and a possible solution to make the event more inclusive.
“Why don’t we allow those children to watch from inside a classroom…”
So often we don’t realise who is being excluded because of a neurodiversity issue, not only
did we find a workable solution, but increased awareness for future planning and made the
WhatsApp group a comfortable space to discuss difficulties our kids might be having.
