Mouse

Mouse is up to his narrow pointed ears in syrup, trapped in the Place of the Humans.
When she first chased him he’d run behind the radiator. When she set the cat on him
he’d run up the table leg and jumped into the tin to hide and now he’s struggling to find
a foothold in the sticky mess. His back feet catch on the wooden spoon which is in the
tin with him.
He can wriggles his way up and out and hide behind the baking tray. The cat is padding
round and round the kitchen mewing that he’s lost his mouse.
Mouse quivers. What should he do? Jump onto that high shelf or into that open handbag
on the chair arm there?
‘It’s all ready to bake!’ .The voice startles him into making his move . Just in time. The
baking tray has gone.
‘Twenty minutes,! Don’t forget’
A great hand comes down on the handbag, snaps it shut and carries it out into the car.
Inside the dark safe bag Mouse finishes licking syrup off his coat, has a short nap and
looks forward to seeing where his next home is to be.
