At the chemist, waiting for my pills
Another prescription to take care of my ills
HRT patches, tablets and pessaries
At nine quid a pop, they soon will be the death of me
At the bank, checking my balance
Approaching the counter, I’m looking askance
“Where’s it all gone? Where’s all me loot?”
“You gave it to Lloyds, Badhams \u2026 and Boots”
Back at home, surveying my stash
of medicines that used up all my cash
Swallow a capsule – down the ‘atch
Onto my bottom, apply a new patch
Now in my bed, I’m tucked up tight
My well-stocked pharmacy on my cabinet – what a sight!
Who knew I’d need so many damned creams?

As it gets dark early and I’m back home from work feeling gloomy, looking out at the
darkness, it gives me time to ponder on life and getting older.
Body getting creaky, bedside cabinet filling up with a plethora of pills and potions and a
reflection that greets me each morning in the bathroom mirror that’s a bit of a shocker!
I find that humour is the only way to deal with this rather depressing reality and I was
inspired to write this poem one day when I counted six different medications in my
collection and really had to concentrate to make sure I matched each ointment to the
correct part of my anatomy! One morning I commenced application without my glasses
and let’s just say, “should have gone to Specsavers” sprang to mind! I hope my poem
